Brad Pitt is still “madly in love” with Angelina Jolie and battled to save their marriage, according to reports.

Jolie, 41, filed for divorce from Pitt, 52, on Monday for “the health of her family” and has asked for physical custody of their six children: Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, and Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and eight-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox.

Pitt was reportedly ‘furious’ following the divorce announcement, but a source has since told The Sun that he still “adores” Jolie and was “desperate” to make their marriage work.

“Brad was desperate for Angelina to give him one more chance,” the source said.

“The reality is Brad’s still madly in love with Angelina. He adores her and never intentionally tried to hurt her.

“Brad was left shell-shocked. He just wanted positivity and doesn’t want anything negative out there about the woman he loves, the mother of his children.

“But he is fighting back and wants custody of the kids.”

Pitt and Jolie met on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith in 2004 and the couple went on to marry in 2014.

Following the news of their split it was rumoured that Pitt had grown close to French actress Marion Cotillard while filming their new WWII drama Allied.

Cotillard, 40, has since denied the reports and insisted her partner of eight years, Guillaume Canet is the 'only man she needs'.

The Rust and Bone actress posted a lengthy statement on Instagram and said she felt compelled to react because the "situation is spiraling and affecting people I love".

Cotillard - who also confirmed she is expecting her second child with Canet - said she hopes those who ran with the rumours will make a “swift recovery” and that Pitt and Jolie will find “peace”.

She wrote: “Finally, I do very much wish that Angelina and Brad, both whom I deeply respect, will find peace in this very tumultuous moment. With all my love, Marion.”
