Rugby icons: The emojis designed for the World Cup
Amar Singh16 September 2015

Fans following the Rugby World Cup across the globe will be encouraged to join the conversation on Twitter with a set of emojis which go live tonight.

The icons designed by the social network for World Rugby will appear when tweeters use the main tournament hashtag — #RWC2015.

They include a player scoring a try and a rugby shirt.

Each of the 20 nations competing in the six-week tournament will have their own emoji flag as organisers looks to expand the game’s appeal.

At the matches, huge screens will display messages of support from supporters, while tweets using the #WearTheRose hashtag will be projected onto the roof of the O2.

During games, the official Rugby World Cup twitter account (@rugbyworldcup) will be inviting fans to vote for their man of the match and for the first time in a global sporting tournament the match ball will have the official tournament hashtag on it.

Alex Trickett, head of sport, Twitter UK said: “The Rugby World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the UK since the 2012 Olympics and we’ve worked closely with the 20 teams, World Rugby and top brands to put Twitter at the heart of the conversation. Twitter is the place for rugby fans to follow the tournament from kick-off to the final.”
