Diggers have already begun to rip up the White Hart Lane pitch - less than 24 hours after Tottenham played their final match on it.

Demolition of the famous old stadium - Tottenham's home for 118 years - started on Monday and one of the first tasks was to start tearing up the playing surface.

Large machinery was seen at the ground as workmen started to dig up the pitch in front of the East Stand.

It was on Sunday that Tottenham had signed off, with Victor Wanyama and Harry Kane scoring in a 2-1 win over Manchester United.

At the end of the game thousands of fans streamed on to the playing arena, with dozens doing their best to get a headstart on the pitch demolition by digging up their own treasured piece of turf.

Mauricio Pochettino and his players - plus an array of club legends - then took part in an emotional farewell ceremony.

Spurs expect the demolition work to take a total of three months as they progress with the construction of a new 61,559 capacity on the same site as their current base.

Scenes captured from a helicopter also show the scale of the work already undertaken, with large sections of seating removed.

Club Chairman Daniel Levy said prior to Sunday's finale: "We have outgrown our current home and we are building a wonderful new home right here. We are not moving.

"The new pitch will overlap the old one. Our new home will slowly embrace and engulf the old one.

"We are determined that it will be a worthy successor to White Hart Lane and a fitting stage for our current and future great teams."

Spurs plan to stage their home games at Wembley Stadium next season before returning to north London for the 2018-19 campaign.
