Harry Kane injury: Tottenham face anxious wait over whether fifth ankle injury in three years is season ending

Tottenham are facing an anxious wait for news of Harry Kane’s fifth ankle injury in three years, amid fears the England captain’s season is over.

Kane, who is expected to undergo a scran on Thursday, left Spurs’ new stadium on crutches and wearing a protective boot on his left ankle following a rash challenge on Fabian Delph in last night’s 1-0 win over Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

It is the second time he has injured his left ankle this season, after he missed seven matches in January and February with ligament damage suffered in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Wembley.

In his absence, Spurs won four straight League games and beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 in the Champions League last-16 first leg, with last night’s match-winner Heung-min Son scoring four times during that period. But they also crashed out of both domestic cups.

Kane has also damaged his right ankle ligaments on three previous occasions, missing three weeks and two matches in March 2018 last season and suffering two separate setbacks in 2016-17, which ruled him out for 13 Spurs games.

The club are waiting for the swelling to subside before giving scanning Kane, but the striker is likely to already have an idea of the severity of the injury. Kane is a quick healer and earlier this year he returned to training two weeks ahead of schedule, after undergoing a specialist rehab programme in the Bahamas.

He missed 40 days before returning in the 2-1 defeat at Burnley and if he is ruled out for a similar length of time again he would be back for a potential Champions League Final in Madrid on June 1 and England’s Nations League semi-final against Holland five days later.

Asked if he feared Kane could miss Spurs’ five remaining League games and Champions League run-in, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said: “Yes. It’s so painful. We can only hope it’s not a big issue and that he recovers as soon as possible, but it doesn’t look good.”

Spurs were also planning to assess Dele Alli after he was forced off at the end clutching his left wrist after falling awkwardly in a challenge with Delph.
