Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has opened on his emotional reaction to getting the chance to finally complete a long-rumoured switch to Old Trafford.

Following years of links and a protracted January transfer saga, the Portuguese international finally arrived in English football earlier this year after sealing a move from Sporting Lisbon worth an initial £46.5million.

Fernandes signed a five-and-a-half year contract at United and wasted little time in making a big impression, instantly become an influential performer in midfield and scoring three goals in nine appearances before the coronavirus pandemic saw the 2019-20 season suspended in March.

The 25-year-old is now preparing for a return to action when the Premier League campaign resumes later this month and, speaking during an Instagram Live session with Mario Djurovski, revealed how finally completing such a dream switch left him in tears and feeling no shortage of trepidation.

"You know, I will say the truth that I was scared," Fernandes said. "It was a dream [come true] but it was a big dream.

"For me, playing in England and for Manchester [United] was the highest part of my career. To play in the Premier League, for one of the best teams in the world.

"When I received the call saying: ‘Bruno, you have the chance of moving to Manchester’, I called my wife, my brother, my sister, my mother and just started crying.

"But I was crying through happiness. I fought all my life for this, for this top club. The chance was here and I needed to take it with both hands, to follow my dream.

"My family knew since the beginning that I wanted to be a footballer, they knew my big dream was to be in the Premier League and to play for Manchester [United]."

United sit fifth in the top-flight ahead of the league's resumption on June 17, with an 11-game unbeaten streak prior to the lockdown having left them just three points adrift of the top four.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side - who have now extended the loan spell of Shanghai Shenua striker Odion Ighalo until the end of January 2021 - have an FA Cup quarter-final against Norwich City coming up, while they also boast a 5-0 lead against Austrian side LASK Linz in their Europa League last-16 tie.
