Former Merseyside managers Brendan Rodgers and David Moyes are the leading contenders for the vacant job of manager at Swansea City after Garry Monk's departure from the club, with Dennis Bergkamp emerging as a surprise outside contender.

A run of form that has seen them pick up just seven points since the end of August has seen Monk, touted as one of the Premier League's brightest managerial prospects, "reluctantly" removed from the Liberty Stadium dugout by Huw Jenkins.

Former manager Brendan Rodgers, who left south Wales to take the Liverpool job in 2012, has been installed as the odds-on favourite by Bet Victor, priced at 1/2 as at 4pm on Wednesday 9 December. He has been out of work since being sacked in October.

Another recently unemployed manager among the leading contenders for the Swansea role is David Moyes, whose odds are at 3/1. There is then a significant gap to Rangers boss Mark Warbuton at 10/1.

Bergkamp is also placed among the leading contenders for the job, a 16/1 shot Bet Victor's price for the Arsenal legend. He has spent the past four years serving as Frank De Boer's assistant at Ajax.

Jenkins admitted that he had been reluctant to remove former club captain Monk, who led Swansea to their best ever league finish last season.

Favourites for Swansea job

Brendan Rodgers - 1/2
David Moyes - 3/1
Mark Warburton - 10/1
Dennis Bergkamp - 16/1
Tim Sherwood - 20/1

"To find ourselves in our current situation from where we were in the first week of September, and considering the drop of performance levels and run of results over the last three months, it has brought us to this unfortunate decision today.

"Garry took on the job 22 months ago with the backing of everyone at the club. And when you take into account the excellent campaign we had last season when we broke all club records in the Premier League, nobody foresaw the position we would be in at this moment in time."

Monk has the best Premier League win ratio of any Swansea manager, his 36 per cent record ahead of Rodgers (32 per cent) and Michael Laudrup (27 per cent).
