Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed he is expecting his second child with his wife Sophie Hunter.

Cumberbatch, 40, revealed his son Christopher is set to get a sibling as he spoke about trying to “prove himself” as a father.

The Sherlock star made the admission while talking Doctor Strange with This Morning’s Alison Hammond, who teased at the rumours about him expanding his family.

“You do know,” he said. “We're expecting our second.”

When asked if being a father is his “biggest achievement” he replied: “I think it's Sophie's biggest achievement.

“I'm still trying prove myself as a dad.”

Cumberbatch married Hunter in the Isle of Wight on Valentine’s Day 2015 before welcoming Christopher later that year.

The actor previously opened up about wanting to have more children and told Graham Norton: “I've become a father and a husband, and in the right order – just. I might go for a Cumber-batch of boys.”

Talking about family life, he added: “It's everything. I have a new life form that needs his father's help in the world and his mother needs a little help once in a while.

“It's what being a parent is about so it's not an excuse to get away from what I am doing – it's what I ought to be doing. After three and a half hours of Hamlet, I think that's okay."
