Historical comedy The Favourite has dominated this year’s BAFTAs, securing an impressive 12 nominations including Best Director, Best Actress and the coveted Best Film.

The Yorgos Lanthimos directed hit, starring British talent and Golden Globe winner Olivia Colman, is out in front, with Bohemian Rhapsody, First Man, Roma and A Star Is Born, trailing behind with seven nominations each.

The film will go up against BlacKkKlansman, Green Book, Roma and A Star Is Born, which was largely snubbed at Sunday night’s Golden Globes, for Best Film.

Colman will face tough competition from her US counterparts Viola Davis, Melissa McCarthy, Glenn Close and Lady Gaga who are all in the running for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

Rami Malek, who won the Best Actor Golden Globe for his portrayal of the late Freddie Mercury in Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, will be hoping to bag the double as he goes up against Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Steve Coogan and Viggo Mortensen.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role will see Adam Driver, Mahershala Ali, Richard E. Grant, Timothée Chalamet and Sam Rockwell, who won the accolade at last year's ceremony for his role in Three Billboards, go head-to-head.

Amy Adams, Claire Foy, Emma Stone, Margot Robbie and Rachel Weisz will battle it out for the female equivalent.

Announced on Wednesday morning by Will Poulter and Hayley Squires, this year's BAFTAs nominations also included Best Director nods for Spike Lee, Paweł Pawlikowski, Alfonso Cuaron, Cooper and Lanthimos.

The nominations come days after Londoners Jessie Buckley, Cynthia Erivo and Letitia Wright made the shortlist for the EE Rising Star award alongside Irish actor Barry Keoghan and US star Lakeith Stanfield.

Honoured: Rami Malek has been recognised for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody

This year’s ceremony will be hosted by Joanna Lumley, who returns for a second consecutive year after taking over from Stephen Fry.

The 72nd EE British Academy Film Award will take place on Sunday, February 10 at the Royal Albert Hall.
