'Rare unopened' jar of Marmite on eBay for £5,000 - but it's still available in shops

No bids: Marmite is still available at retail price everywhere else in the UK

A “rare” unopened jar of Marmite is available on eBay for an eyewatering £5,000 after Tesco pulled the much-loved spread from its shelves over a price dispute.

The supermarket is said to have rejected a 10 per cent price hike from supplier Unilever, who also own household brands such as PG Tips, Flora and Pot Noodles.

The firm wanted to increase prices to compensate for the crashing value of the pound against the euro post-Brexit. But when Tesco refused, it halted all deliveries.

Now Marmite fans are being offered the chance to bid online for one of the last jars from Tesco's shelves, despite the fact it is still available at retail price everywhere else.

The description for the item, which hasn't received a single bid yet, reads: “One of the last remaining examples of this fabled product in private hands.

"Unsealed, it is in the same condition it was when it was plucked from the supermarket shelf. Little did I know it would be the last Marmite I ever bought - and now, you, too, can buy your last ever Marmite.”

A used jar of Marmite is also available on eBay, but for the slightly more ludicrous sum of £100,000.
