UK records 70 further coronavirus deaths as London reaches 3 million vaccine jab milestone

A further 70 people have died after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK.

It brings the total UK death toll to 126,515. However, separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 149,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

According to the latest Government figures a further 6,187 people have tested positive for the disease. It brings the total to 4,325,315.

The latest Government data also shows that up to March 25 shows that of the 32,325,993 coronavirus vaccines given in the UK so far, 29,316,130 were first doses – a rise of 324,942 on the previous day.

Some 3,009,863 were second doses, an increase of 234,382.

It comes as London reached the milestone of offering the first dose of a coronavirus vaccine to more than three million people in the capital.

By Wednesday night, 2,974,486 first doses and 261,457 second ones — a total of 3,235,943 — had been given.

This week about 35,000 to 40,000 Londoners a day received a first jab, enabling the three million landmark to be reached last night.

Meanwhile the coronavirus reproduction number, or R rate, has increased slightly while still remaining below 1.

The R rate in the UK is today said to between 0.7 to 0.9 and between 0.8 and 1.0 in England, according to the latest Government figures.

This is a slight increase compared to the UK figure of between 0.6 and 0.9 last week.

There have been a further 190 cases of coronavirus in Wales, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 208,694.

Public Health Wales reported three further deaths, taking the total in the country since the start of the pandemic to 5,498.

No further deaths of patients who previously tested positive for Covid-19 in Northern Ireland were reported by the Department of Health on Friday.

Another 181 confirmed cases of the virus were recorded in the last 24-hour reporting period.
