Thousands of Brits woke to another morning without water after thawing temperatures in the wake of Storm Emma’s icy conditions caused pipes to burst.

Thames Water said this morning it had repaired a large leaking water pipe that was affecting homes in south west London and that it expected water to return “over the next few hours”.

But with many still reporting loss of supply, the firm was forced to open bottled water stations for residents.

It comes as water suppliers across the country tackled water shortages amid increased demand on Monday morning.

South East Water, which supplies Kent and Sussex, said it is still experiencing water supply issues after “an unprecedented number of bursts and leaks across our network”.

While Southern Water said it is working to restore water to around 5,000 customers in Sittingbourne, Kent.

“Please help us to help you by only using the water you absolutely must,” it said.

In north London, Affinity Water said customers in Barnet and Southgate EN4, EN5 & N14 reported low water pressure and a loss of supply.

And West Midlands supplier Severn Trent apologised to customers in Birmingham, North Nottingham, Rugby and Southam after “an unprecedented number of leaks”.

It said issues affecting supply had been fixed, however people were still reporting shutoffs on Monday.

Welsh Water, Yorkshire Water and South West Water all said they were dealing with problems.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said the situation in the capital was “unacceptable”.

In a tweet, he wrote: “It is unacceptable that thousands of Londoners remain without water this morning.

“I have sought assurances from Thames Water that they are doing everything possible to fix the problems and get the supply switched back on as soon as possible for everyone who has been affected.”

Thames Water has opened four water stations where residents can come and pick up bottled water.

South East Water is also running three stations for customers in Kent and Sussex.

It assured that water has passed all of its quality tests and is safe to give to infants.

In its latest statement, Thames Water said: “Our customers who are without water are our top priority, and we asked for support and understanding from everyone else last night to help save as much water as possible. We didn’t do that lightly and the response has been excellent.

"Demand for water this morning was lower than expected and we’re very grateful to everyone who cut back to help others. But things are not yet back to normal and we hope they will continue to help as much as they can.

“We’re sorry to all those customers who are without water. We know how infuriating this is and want to assure them that the whole company is working flat out to fix the problems.”
