A spurned lover has seemingly committed a very public act of revenge after they daubed a luxury car with graffiti following an affair.

Dozens of people have taken to Twitter after a white Range Rover was pictured outside Harrods in Basil Street, Knightsbridge with the words "Cheater, it's over" and "Hope she was worth it!" sprayed in red lettering.

But several bystanders claimed the car was a PR stunt.

One doorman at Harrods told the Standard: "A young bloke got out the car, went for a cup of tea and then left again.

"I think it was a hoax to be honest. Everybody has been talking about it and there were lots of people crowding around and taking photographs of it."

A worker at Gran Caffe, next to Harrods, said they saw the car parked outside the department store but did not see the driver arrive or leave.

Cabbie Enzo Andrean, from Enfield, said he first saw the car being driven near Belgravia Square at around 10.30am.

He told the Standard: "I saw it driving it about and it had the word 'cheater' written on it.

"I was thinking that's somebody's wife. She has obviously caught him out. I tried to read what other words were on it but it turned off.

"It looked like a new car to me and it could only have been spray paint. This wasn't done with a brush."

A Harrods security guard said the Range Rover arrived at the department store with the graffiti already scrawled on it.

But others were less sceptical.

Property developer Stephen Halford, 55, said: “The car was parked opposite Harrods.

“I think the wife had sprayed the Range Rover and drove it there parked in one of the most conspicuous places in London in the heart of Knightsbridge.

“There was a large crowd gathering and everyone was taking photos and messaging their friends. It seemed to brigthen people's days and a bit of street justice was seen to be done.

“Everyone was applauding the lady, I think she is a class act.”

Many witnesses also took to Twitter to air their views.

One woman posted: "Oh my, that's one way to get back at him...! Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned."

A man said: "Note to self don't #cheat this just happened", while another wrote: “If you think your having a bad day...” accompanied with pictures of the car."
