David Bowie's 70th birthday celebrations happening across the capital

Almost exactly a year on from his death, the Thin White Duke is being celebrated across London this weekend

David Bowie, whose 70th birthday would have been this Sunday, January 8, is being celebrated this weekend across London.

The late singer died almost exactly a year ago, succumbing to cancer at his New York flat on January 10, 2016. Tonight, January 6, The Prince Albert is hosting a Bowie party, recreating the mass celebrations they had last year. Details can be found here, but the event is sadly now sold out. However, there are plenty more chances to show your Modern Love for the man.

Bowie party at Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes

January 6, Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes, WC1H 9EU

Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes are paying tribute to the singer tonight with a screening of Labyrinth, the 1986 fantasy film which Bowie starred in. Tickets are £5 and can be bought here, or £7 on the door. The film starts at 8.30pm, and will be followed by a party until 3am, which will feature all the Let’s Dance singer’s biggest hits.

Fancy dress is encouraged, with a a prize for best outfit. There'll also be a shrine, which guests are encouraged to contribute to, free face painting and a special Ziggy Stardust cocktail.

David Bowie Tribute Party at Cafe Cairo

January 7, Cafe Cairo, SW9 9PE

Tribute band Cats From Japan will storm through a set at Cafe Cairo, and it promises to be a wonderful chance to hear Bowie’s best stuff live, but there’ll also be DJ Sheila Stocking warming up for them from 6pm. After the band, playing 10 - 11pm, comes DJ Chico, playing acid house and rave. Tickets are £5, and can be bought here.

Celebrating David Bowie at O2 Academy Brixton

January 8, O2 Academy Brixton, SW9 9SL

This is the big one: Gary Oldman leads this tribute to the Thin White Duke at Brixton’s O2 on Sunday January 8, where fans spontaneously gathered last year in mourning. Oldman will be joined by former Bowie band members Mike Garson, Earl Slick, Adrian Belew, Mark Plati, Gerry Leonard, Gail Ann Dorsey, Sterling Campbell, Zachary Alford, Holly Palmer and Catherine Russell to play a night of his music, with various special guests expected. Doors open at 6.30pm, proceeds of the show will go to charity Children & the Arts, and more information can be found here.

Walking Tour

January 8, Across London

The David Bowie Musical Walking Tour launches this weekend on Sunday. Ziggy fans can take a tour hour tour which visits Bowie landmarks around the capital, including his childhood home and school, and the now world-famous memorial of him in Brixton. Songs from his vast back catalogue will be performed, and they’re promising plenty of DB anecdotes. More information here.

As part of the London Short Film Festival, Picturehouse Central will be screening three Bowie related pieces, including silent mime-themed art film, originally screened at sex cinemas, and a look at the story behind his video for Let’s Dance. Full details can be found here.
