Parody: This Morning mocked Game of Thrones' Starbucks gaffe

ITV’s This Morning appeared to gently poke fun at Game of Thrones’ Starbucks coffee cup gaffe with a rogue prop of their own.

A handful of eagle-eyed viewers noticed that a branded cup appeared behind Holly Willoughby and guests on today’s edition of the morning magazine show, after a Starbucks drink accidentally ended up in a scene in episode four of the HBO fantasy drama’s final season.

The offending receptacle could clearly be seen in front of Emilia Clarke’s Daenarys Targaryen during a dining scene in the latest instalment of the series, which charted the fallout from last week’s Battle of Winterfell.

Echoing this high profile mistake, the This Morning production team seemed to have deliberately placed a stray cup behind presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield’s initial mugs.

Their subtle joke wasn’t lost on fans, who praised the show for the visual gag.

“See @thismorning paying homage to #GameOfThrones and their filming mistake with a #Starbucks coffee cup,” one fan wrote. “See yours in behind the P&H mugs on the shelf behind Phil and Holly on the medical feature!! Brilliant…”

“@thismorning you doing a game of thrones thing with the Starbucks cup on the shelf lol, who’s [sic] is it!” another asked.

When one viewer pointed out that the cup could be seen behind reporter Sharon Marshall during her soap update, the presenter re-tweeted the photo, adding: “Ha! Very good whoever put that there.”

This Morning’s prank comes shortly after Game of Thrones’ executive producer Bernie Caulfield apologised for the error.

“We’re sorry!” she said in an interview with WNYC radio earlier today, before joking that “Westeros was the first place to actually, you know, get a Starbucks.

She went on to assert that very few production errors have been made throughout eight seasons of the show, telling WNYC: “[The] prop people and decorators are [...] so on it, 100 per cent.

“If that’s the worst thing they’re finding, then we’re in good shape.”

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV from 10.30am. Game of Thrones continues on Mondays at 2am and 9pm on Sky Atlantic and is available to stream on demand on NOW TV.
