So there is it – Mary Berry is officially leaving the Great British Bake Off.

The star of the show has announced that she will not be staying on the show when it moves from Channel 4 to the BBC.

In a statement, Berry said she was leaving out of ‘loyalty’ to the BBC.

“The Bake Off family - Paul, Mel and Sue have given me so much joy and laughter,” she said.

"My decision to stay with the BBC is out of loyalty to them, as they have nurtured me, and the show, that was a unique and brilliant format from day one.

“I am just sad for the audience who may not be ready for change, I hope they understand my decision.”

Of course, Berry’s departure has seen a huge outpouring on social media as fans of the hugely popular baking show reacted to the news.

Plenty are upset that the star of the show is stepping down.

Others – including politician John Prescott - are impressed with Berry’s decision.
