Doctor Foster fans have called for a third season of hit BBC show after season two ended with a series of unanswered questions.

Suggesting that a third series of the drama was likely, Tuesday night’s episode came to an end with the dramatic disappearance of Gemma Foster's teenage son.

“It's not that we want series 3 of #DoctorFoster, but we're demanding it. One of the best shows on TV that has you on the edge of your seat,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

Another posted: “Okay look as much as this show makes me wanna bang my head against a wall, I’m gonna need a season 3 #DoctorFoster.”

The dark and adrenaline-fuelled final episode saw Gemma Foster’s husband Simon attempt to kill himself in front of their teenage son after having his family and money taken away from him.

After saving him, Gemma soon realised that her teenage son Tom has disappeared, prompting an emotional and unfruitful search.

“Season 3 : ' The Search for Tom ' coming next year on Netflix. #DoctorFoster,” one viewer posted.

Another fan wrote: “I need a season 3 where she tries to find Tom #DoctorFoster.”

Some viewers suggested that the next series should join forces with the BBC’s other hit drama, The Missing.

“Series 3, Gemma hires Julien Baptiste to find Tom #DoctorFoster,” one tweet read.

“The clues were there...Gemma wearing a roll neck jumper and a forest in Autumn. Series 3 is going all Scandinavian and Missingish isn't it? #DoctorFoster,” another wrote.

A tweet posted by the BBC following the finale seemed to suggest that Doctor Foster had ended for good.

“Gone... but never, ever forgotten. Thank you for joining us for #DoctorFoster,” it read.
